Florida Advances DeSantis Redistricting Plan to Boost GOP Seats

(MENAFN) Florida’s legislature on Tuesday moved forward with a congressional redistricting proposal backed by Governor Ron DeSantis that could significantly reshape the state’s political balance ahead of the November midterm elections, according to media reports.

The plan is expected to potentially create up to four additional Republican-leaning congressional seats, strengthening the party’s hold on Florida’s US House delegation.

Democratic lawmakers have criticized the proposal, arguing that the map violates constitutional protections and amounts to racial gerrymandering. They pointed to provisions in the state’s Fair Districts Amendments, which state that district boundaries should not be drawn to favor or disadvantage a political party or incumbent.

“No district shall be drawn with the intent to favor or disfavor a political party or an incumbent,” the amendment states.

However, legal representatives for DeSantis argued during Tuesday’s proceedings that the proposed map complies with constitutional standards, claiming that federal law takes precedence over conflicting elements of the state’s Fair Districts rules.

The governor’s office has also maintained that certain sections of the amendments are themselves unconstitutional, particularly language related to protecting the ability of racial and language minorities to elect candidates of their choice.

According to the proposal’s projected impact, the new map could shift the state’s congressional delegation further toward Republicans, increasing their representation from 20 to 24 seats out of 28, while reducing Democratic-held seats to four.

The measure is expected to face further political and legal scrutiny as it moves through the legislative process and potential court challenges.
